Sam Worthington

If Avatar does as well as everyone thinks it’s going to, then Sam Worthington will become a household name pretty soon. The studios must be anticipating this as there seems to be no shortage of work coming his way.

The Last Days of American Crime is the title of the next film he’ll be working on. Based on a comic book by the same name and set in the ‘not-too-distant’ future, the story sees the American government try to broadcast a signal that prevents anyone from performing any criminal acts… I wonder if it will stop Michael Bay directing?

I think this story has potential. We’ve seen these dystopian future type of movies before with the likes of Minority Report, Brazil, V for Vendetta, Demolition Man etc. And they generally do well. But is the idea of a mind control signal that prevents people committing crime a different enough story to separate it from these other movies though? We’ll have to wait and see.

Futuristic sci-fi movies seem to be Worthington’s bread and butter at the moment after Terminator Salvation, Avatar and now this. It’s one of my favourite genres, but hopefully he won’t become the ‘go-to-guy’ to perform these types of movies. You’ve gotta keep mixing it up with fresh talent to keep these kind of films interesting.
