It’s no coincidence that my all time favourite films have deep rooted connections to my childhood. I’m no psychologist, but I know that I find great joy in the things I enjoyed as a child.
I consider Ghostbusters to be one of best examples of something I loved as a child and continue to love in adulthood. I remember when it was the talk of the playground. We had the toys – we role played as Egon, Peter, Ray and Winston and I persuaded my dad to buy me a copy on VHS which I watched religiously.
I sometimes wonder whether I can ever be as passionate about a movie I’ve seen in my adult life as one that I saw and enjoyed as a child.
With talk about a 3rd Ghostbusters movie I’m obviously extremely excited. It’s something I’ve been waiting for, for a long time – but now I’m starting to wonder whether it will reach my expectations and even if it does, will it still hold a place in my heart like the first two?
My prediction is that I’ll be left dissapointed. After all, the Star Wars prequels dissapointed me, and let’s not even talk about Indiana Jones. Both films I had high expectations for and both I tried so hard to like, but they’ll never compare to the originals. Perhaps you can’t relive your childhood through films… I know I’ll keep trying though.
