There have been rumours of a possible Hancock sequel for a while now, but director Peter Berg has now confirmed that it is definitely going ahead.
At the Toronto Film Festival, Berg said “Everybody’s going to come back for a sequel”. This means Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman will be returning.
The plot is being kept secret, but Berg said that Smith and Theron will once again play immortal gods, who lose their power when in each other’s presence. The two must team up to deal with a third entity. That suggests either another immortal or some kind of super villain that they’ll have to face.
One of the plot points that wasn’t explored in the first film, was the 3,000 year old world they come from. This was only hinted at in the first film, so it could be interesting to learn more about.
Although Berg has come out with this announcement, I’m curious as to why he’s put this out so early, when no script has been written yet and the cast haven’t even officially signed on. There must be quite a bit of money behind this for them to be confident about getting Will Smith to return before anything’s been signed.
I liked Hancock, I didn’t really understand the criticism some critics gave it. It was a refreshing change to the superhero genre to have a hero that everyone hates. And I did not see the twist coming.
I’m happy that Jason Bateman is returning though. His optimistic PR guy character was played brilliantly in the first film.
No release date has been set by Sony, but with Hancock making $624 million at the box office, I imagine they’ll want to get this moving quickly.
