The Howling Movie Poster

It comes as no surprise that with New Moon currently tearing up the box office we’re going to see all things Vampire or Werewolf related get green lit.

Variety reports this morning that eighties werewolf slasher movieThe Howling is getting re-launched as The Howling: Reborn.

Shooting is expected to start in February for a Halloween 2010 release, but the plot is being kept firmly under wraps. So we don’t know if it will bear any similarity to the original or not.

I’ve never seen any of the original Howling movies. They were one of those films that my friends would always hype up and tell me how gory it was, which just ended up putting me off. So whenever I saw it in the video store, I’d skip it for something safer (Yes I know, I was a bit of a wuss).

Can ‘reboots’ of these franchises actually work? I’m sure there’s a loyal following for these movies, but you could probably say that about any eighties horror franchise. And there are a lot of them. Does it have the kind of following that Friday the 13th, Halloween or A Nightmare on Elm Street has?

We know that Halloween has failed in its attempt to reboot recently, and A Nightmare on Elm Street is the next one in the firing line. Does The Howling have an actual chance at succeeding and is there enough interest for it to be successful?
